As someone who follows the field of AI very closely and have for years, not exactly. It was a bit unexpected seeing just how capable GPT-3.5/4 is, but we've had LLMs for a little while now, it was somewhat expected, otherwise why even try scaling it up in the first place? Also, most experts have expected AGI before the end of the century.
I believe in 2016 a survery was conducted that polled 300-ish some AI researches on when AGI was expected and it averaged out at about 45 years.
Now for the average person, yeah you're probably right.
