I really wish AI was around when I was a kid, it might have saved a lot of pain & suffering for me & my family.
When I was 14, I was diagnosed with cancer & paralyzed from the waist down bc the tumor was pushing on my spinal cord. I had been to Dr after Dr & a spine “specialist” & physical therapy & a chiropractor, etc. I kept getting told the pain keeping me up all night in tears, unable to lay down or even sit, was just growing pains & bc I weighed a little over what I should(20 lbs over), I was told to loose it & it would help. I joined jazzercise & weight watchers, lost the weight & low & behold - It didn’t help. I wasn’t sleeping & was missing lots of school. Insurance wouldn’t ok an MRI bc the X-ray didn’t show any abnormalities - which is the point of getting the MRI, right?! Finally my parents told the dr to order the MRI, they’d find a way to pay for it, & after it showed a giant tumor on my L3 spine, insurance did cover the cost. I was rushed to a children’s hospital 2 hours away from home later that night & was finally diagnosed, but that was only after I became paralyzed from my waist down. Had to have surgery to release the pressure from the tumor on the nerves, chemo for a year & radiation for a month. Was told I might not walk again. It’s been 23+ years since & I walk with a cane but have numerous health issues thanks to the chemo/radiation damage. Looked into suing but lawyer said we had no case, dr’s were following protocol. I suffer with severe nerve pain in my legs & feet, CRPS, which is said to be the most painful nerve pain known to Dr’s. I can’t have a normal life with a regular job, a husband & a bunch of kids or even a home of my own. (Disability doesn’t pay well & I thank God I have my parents & brother to rely on) If only those dr’s had listened & not brushed it off. (I was good during the day when I saw them, it was only at night when the pain flared - which I later found out is a big sign of it being cancer & the dr’s should’ve known!) If it had been taken seriously & if insurance didn’t have stupid rules in place or if AI could’ve taken a shot at diagnosing me, I might have gotten help before becoming paralyzed & wouldn’t have to live everyday in excruciating pain. But who knows for sure. Maybe my family would’ve gotten in a car accident on our way to the hospital if they had found it sooner?! Life’s too short to wonder about the “what-if’s” & to wish things had gone differently. All that does is get you angry & depresses the crap out of you. I did have some good happen from all this. Not a lot, but I try to look for any silver linings I can.
