I design cabins and liveries for business/VIP jets and super yachts and just recently an article was written about our business and I was asked about the future of our industry and what impact AI will have on what we do given that already you can call up a (seemingly) comprehensive, photo realistic cabin design with AI, but in reality AI is as far from being able to design a practical, safe, functional and personally appealing cabin as it ever was, it lacks the nuance of human design, it lacks an understanding of the aesthetic brief and being able to read between the lines in a client brief to eek out the perfect cabin for that human client. It also lacks the understanding of safety and regulations that dictate our designs and materials, it lacks the nuanced relationships formed over many years with textiles and materials suppliers that inform our decisions and it does not take into account practical matters like weight and balance. That said I’ve just laid out exactly what is required for AI to completely replace me - am I worried? Not really. I think a combination or collaboration of the best AI has to offer with the best of what we do is the best we can offer our clients and I suspect that is the same for other industries that combine creativity with science like architecture, clothing design, interior design etc.
