Alas (amusingly), some of the horror stories were user-prompted; asking for the creation of 'violent fantasies'. However, unprompted behavior of this type is (statistically speaking) bound to happen. As a parallel, trying to create/train an AI is just like trying to raise a child (or train a dog). Lots of wacky, stupid... and occasionally awful things may occur along the way. That said, the consequences of poorly raising an AI system to AGI is indeed nightmare fuel.
