I think people should be compensated if their art is used as training data. But I also think society doesn’t have a responsibility to financially support professional artists (beyond what will still exist due to continuing demand for manual art), if they are replaced by AI techniques. By that logic all sorts of other creative activities should be supported too, even if there’s no commercial demand for them.
Beyond the question of where the training data comes from, I think we shouldn’t discount prompt writing as creative expression. While the results might be quicker, I’m sure there are a whole slew of possible techniques around manipulating the latent space to convey your ideas. A lot of modern conceptual art does away with technical skill and more focus is put on the ideas and intentions of the artist.
