I wanna preface by saying that I absolutely agree with this video, fantastic~ I do have one note.
I'm a programmer, and the way I feel about code is the way you feel about visual art. My passion is game design, and I've written most of my games the old-school way: for each game, I would write an engine from scratch, specifically designed to support that game. I used to look down on visual artists who thought programming was too hard to get into and a waste of time, who would use existing game engines and drag-and-drop interfaces to build their games.
So I'd write my engine and all my code, and the game would be done! Except it's _all_ placeholder graphics. That doesn't feel as important as the code to me, so I put off worrying about it, but then I was faced with a dilemma: I could hire an artist and pay them who knows how much money to do art for my game, or I could do the art myself and it would be awful and I hate the process of drawing, I just have passion for other things.
Nowadays, I'm dating artists who are willing to help out, and I have some income (and I've bought my fair share of commissions), but back then I was a starving college kid. And if there was a way back then to create images by writing a text prompt instead of by drawing, I'd have been _all over that._
Point is, I understand where tech bros are coming from when they talk about not having to waste time learning how to draw. For you, drawing is a passion, but for me it's ... just, someone else's passion. So telling me to just learn to draw is like if I told people to just learn to program.
At its very best, AI art exists to make visual art more available to people who don't have a passion for it. Which is exactly the same thing that digital art did. Digital artists don't have to learn 90% of the skills traditional artists learn, because we have tools now like stroke smoothing and layers and an undo button. It's _easy mode_.
After all this was over, AI art would have become the next stage of that easy mode, an even easier way to make images that even more people have access to. But if we want _quality,_ we would still hire a real artist. There would still be a market for real hand-drawn art, because AI art won't fool people forever: eventually, everyone would be accustomed to its limitations, and everyone would be able to tell at a glance if it's AI.
None of that really matters though, since, the environmental impact of generative AI becoming part of daily life is kind of astronomical, and this shit needs to be stopped for that reason at least.
