I don't think generative AI = art theft is a good argument. Legally it's not, but even from a moral standpoint I don't think it holds any water.
Think about it this way: did you ask Capcom for permission to draw those monsters? If it's not copyright infringement for you to download and use their art for reference in your drawing, why is it copyright infringement for generative AI to download and use images for statistical analysis? Neither one of you are redistributing the original work.
Generative AI pushing artists out of jobs is the biggest problem right now, but I think the biggest problem long-term will be a lack of original artwork. Generative models are functionally incapable of creating an art style, so if we as a society stop hiring artists then art will never evolve. It'll always be mimicking the snapshot of art as it was in 2022-2024.
