This isn't exclusive to the US or the west either.
I've been teaching ESL in Korea for 13 years. Even when I started, the general approach was just vocab ppt and then ppt game.
I even had complaints filed against me by 3rd grade homeroom teachers for trying to supplement the 10 minutes per unit (each unit is 4 lessons and only one of the 4 has part of the lesson with some phonics) with additional phonics and basic 3 letter word reading.
That was considered too hard because, despite 90 percent of the class following along well and enjoying it, 5 percent were struggling and 5 percent do literally nothing in class no matter how easy I make it.
6th graders who have been studying for 4 years can't read 3 and 4 letter words outside of their vocabulary list that they just memorized. And God forbid I try and solve that problem at the beginning of their English language journey that they will be required to study for 10 to 12 years.
Every kid is glued to a screen playing roblox or swiping tik tok vids the second they aren't in class. We got 6th graders spouting incel talking points because there is literally no limits or guidelines from their parents on what they watch.
My friend teaches middle schoolers and even though he is their English teacher, they ask him what Korean words mean all the time. They have no general knowledge at all about the world around them.
There also is no pass fail system in this country. This means even if they are struggling, instead of having a reason to improve (not being held back) it's easier to just give up and just start a never ending pattern of being behind and lost.
Now add in chat gpt and similar Ai tools sweeping the nation and it gets even worse. Universities are in panic mode; they already struggled with global reputation due to rampant plagiarism, but now that has been mostly rep
