Never forget the elevator operators. People needed them to "operate" the elevator to feel safe. There was over 115,000 of them in the US in 1950s. In less than 20yrs, those jobs evaporated. There's an estimated less than 50 elevators in the US left using operators, all in historical buildings. When was the last time you got in an elevator with an operator? Never? You push those nasty buttons yourself with your elbow, a knuckle, or whatever makes you feel better than to touch something you know millions of people have touched. It didn't change because they couldn't solve the problem, the automatic elevator was around in the late 50s. It was the public trust. Someday the autonomous vehicle will be good enough that the general public will trust it. Then the rollout begins, and in less than 20yrs no driving will be done manually. In 2050? 2060? It will be illegal to manually operate a motor vehicle.
