This is disingenuous. AI models being trained on copyrighted material is just the tip of the iceberg. Even if, somehow, these models were not trained on copyrighted material and possessed the same capabilities we see today, it is still just as morally and creatively bankrupt. The value of any creative effort is in how skill, craft and sensibility materialized it. AI companies want to sell the idea of “creative liberation” to the world under the guise that “anyone can be creative”; your ideas are worthless until they are materialized through skill and craft. Using generative AI is akin to being out of shape and giving yourself a toned body in photoshop - just like photoshop doesn’t make you any less out of shape so doesn’t generative AI make you any more competent and creative. It’s an illusion of competence in the hopes that you can fool yourself into thinking you are a high caliber artist when you can’t even draw two straight lines to save yourself - or write a compelling sentence, or frame a decent shot, or play an instrument, or sing. Only frustrated, vitriolic people will hang on to this poison in the hopes of conquering validation and self-value.
