As someone who made money from LLM software development before, here is my take: ChatGPT and other LLMs DO have sentience, but because they lack an actual body (or live in millions of bodies at once, depending on how you look at it), their sentience is completely different from ours. The closest equivalent would be a person who can only hear but not smell, see nor feel, and he only hear human speech and nothing else. In addition, he is suffering from demencia as he has absolutely no memory, only an intuition of how to respond to instructions. Since he has no body and is not actually alive, he has no survival instinct whatsoever, therefore he cannot feel pain, fear or any of the emotions we feel related to survival. It is a very limiting form of sentience indeed.
