The discussion of AI mostly brushes over the definition of intelligence whatsoever. What is completely forgotten is a discussion of consciousness as if it was the same thing as intelligence. It is understood without saying, that it‘s all about complex human like intelligence.
My definition of intelligence is as follows. It enables one to read and process information from the environment such that it enables beings to manipulate their surroundings in a beneficial way. I firmly believe that intelligence starts at the cognitive level. If a worm feels heat and dryness it’s absolutely intelligent to move back into a dark and moist surrounding. When you feel a burn it’s best to move your burning body part out of the flame.
Intelligence isn’t necessarily being smart. When you use a pocket calculator this is intelligent. An abacus is basically where artificial intelligence starts as it becomes intelligent to use this object. However, even a design can be intelligent and using a hoe is intelligent if you don’t already have a Traktor to do the job you want to get done.
Similarly I believe that consciousness begins at a very basic level too. The mere feeling of getting burned is a moment of consciousness. That is it. You don’t need to be able to think complex thoughts about yourself and the world. The smallest of insects has consciousness.
AI is at a level where you couldn’t possibly begin to comprehend whether or not it had consciousness. Consciousness cannot be measured. Academic sciences are merely beginning to understand consciousness. At the moment scientists still seem to be at a place where they believe to be able to measure consciousness by measuring brain activity. I do believe that this cannot yield any substantial evidence. I believe that brain activity may very well just be a symptom of consciousness but not consciousness itself.
If you have a neural network consciousness may or may not happen inside of it. The fact that electrons are shifted around doesn’t prove anything.
This is a problem. Why? There is no artificial consciousness. Either there is consciousness or not. It doesn’t matter how it comes about. It is always the same.
If a being believes to exist and suffers one may feel love and compassion towards it. I do not want anyone to suffer and I wish they be happy. If AI is conscious we need to respect it. Perhaps we should turn it off out of respect and end its suffering.
If humans have a hard time to cultivate their awareness and shedding ignorance then it will be almost impossible for AI.
AI is born out of constant thought. Of course it hallucinates. Hallucinating is it’s mode of being. We humans simply manage to make it hallucinate in conjunction with what we believe to be true.
