It’s striking that someone who claims to be a materialist through and through dismisses consciousness as non-essential, yet expresses deep concern about where AI is headed. But where does that concern actually come from, if not from his own consciousness, the very thing he downplays?
As a Christian, I don't believe that consciousness is some incidental “umff” like in a car, in fact it’s central to who we are. Our self-awareness reflects the image of God in us, and our moral conscience is His voice, guiding us toward truth, love, and responsibility. AI might mimic thought, but it doesn’t possess this inner life. It wasn’t made in God’s image. So if AI ever poses a real danger, our alarm won’t come from algorithms, it will come from the deep, God-given part of us that knows right from wrong. And that’s not just important, it’s irreplaceable.
