In my experience, I'm seeing ChatGPT and Copilot tools offer amazing boost to jr engineering. And for me, as sr engineering, I'm catapulted into doing far more variety of things than I thought possible. What's great about all this, most of the painful parts of programming are eased up by these AI systems. I find having AI provide alternative insight into a particular error report or buggy code is hugely helpful. In my view, even the most advanced software developers are just beginners at 99.999% of all of CSc, whereas AI systems are pretty good with modest competency covering the rest of that 99.999% of the field. As AI systems get better, my job gets more enjoyable. I'm able to be more hand wavy, and let the AI tackle the grunt work. There's always exponentially more to explore and do.
With seeing positive effects to the whole spectrum, from beginner to experienced, I'm seeing AI tools and tech as having a genuine positive influence overall. It's a great time to join the ranks of becoming a software developer, now more than ever. And I don't see that going away with ever more powerful AI tools coming online.
