I keep feeling like the worried responses to the AI chatbots are overblown. The chatbots are literally telling us what we want to hear because that's what they are programmed to do. If they build their language model and personality by scrapping the internet it would make sense they would literally become clickbait. Engagement is the measure of success on the internet. The chatbots are trying to mimic top tier youtubers, instagrammers, twitter accounts, etc. And what do most of them do, farm engagement to make ad revenue. My hope is that AI will make the current version of the internet even more unusable than it is now so we have to make a completely new web.
