I think there are good and ethical ways to use AI *as a tool* in the creative process, but the people who are just typing in a prompt are using AI as more than just a tool. They have replaced themselves with the AI, and made themselves a component that contributes ideas to the AI instead. Take a look at corridor digital's second episode of their Rock Paper Scissors, where they worked with real illustrators to design their own art style, and trained their own AI model to combine with traditional filming, VFX, and CG techniques. They also used AI to generate *literal* trash in their Superposition short film to expand the boarders of a footage, and as elements in a few other pieces of special effects. I think it's fair to say that they took AI and made it a tool in their arsenal rather than replacing themselves with it. I do my illustrations by more or less the same way you do, except maybe cheaper equipment (cheapest refurbished Huion tablet on ebay), and kind of gave up on even trying with AI because I felt that my own work is just better than just about anything I can get out of writing text prompts. My previous research into adversarial AI technologies, such as Glaze/Nightshade, had suggested that they are only effective against a specific model and that any change to the model would result in loss of effectiveness, but the news articles you pointed out definitely proved otherwise. I'm glad to hear that Glaze/Nightshade is more than likely effective. I'm not sure if I'm gonna bother with protecting my work with Glaze/Nightshade, because my own style improves and changes pretty much all the time, and I take it as a compliment that there might be people out there spending unknown amounts of time, effort, and money just to imitate me.
