So, basically, the average person is no better off than a medieval peasant who relied on information spread via travelers. Good luck sussing out who's telling the truth and what motives they have for manipulating you. The easiest way to curb enlightenment is to poison the well so thoroughly that even those with the best critical reasoning skills can scarcely be sure of their sources. I have a feeling that these big AI companies put all of this out into the wild for the average person knowing that people would do the work for them. Lend their time, energy and likenesses to training these models whilst simultaneously creating endless streams of bogus "news images," "informational videos", etc. all in the name of a bit of fun or easy money.
