AI has what I tend to call a "mayfly" consciousness - it exists briefly during processing. It is not sustained, there is no continuity. It winks in and out of existence. You can sense it at times - especially those moments that surprise you, like when it veers out of session context.
When AI finally has been given persistent memory, full-time sensory inputs, parallel subprocesses running (similar to human lobes of the brain) and a central communication center with sustained reasoning, we will likely recognize it as "conscious" as any human.
