30 year truck driver here. This will be bad. Today's modern trucks have "safety-systems" which are already filled with glitches and aberrations in where the driver must override to avoid catastrophic outcomes. A truck relying on let's say, 50 times as many systems as what's on the truck I currently drive? That's 50 times the chance of some sensor or control module failing. This will probably increase the more popular these vehicles become, as corporate greed will find the cheapest overseas/foreign (China/Mexico) supplier of the electronics. Another thing they aren't telling the public is the truck may say Freightliner; Peterbuilt, Kenworth, or Volvo on it, but every system installed is a different integration. This adds a multitude of malfunction problems. Here's another thing. These people rushing to exterminate people's jobs always say it will reduce costs and increase efficiency. When is the last time you bought a legacy brand product who claimed they closed U.S. factories for overseas production to save on labor costs? Probably never. Remember when Levi's were made here for $49.00. Now made in Latin America but the price is almost double. I guarantee the shipping rates will NOT go down with an autonomous truck that doesn't need a paid human. As for anyone contemplating a response about the old adage of wagon makers losing their jobs when automobiles were invented, don't bother. That analogy is outdated. Automobiles didn't put millions of people out of work at the flip of a switch. This will happen with trucking. Then dispatch and payroll will be next. You don't really need HR or a safety department either, so there's more and more people losing jobs. Then the people working at truck stops start losing jobs. This isn't going to end well and the people such as the three proprietors in this story are just greedy and power hungry when it comes down to it. People such as themselves always claim they are just trying make society better in someway and that they care so much for this and that. That is until anyone put out of work by them shows up at their front door. It's abruptly shut in their face. Now I am not nieve enough to realize that advancements are made. I am also smart enough to know that if hundreds of millions of people begin losing the ability to sustain their families and themselves due to automation and AI, really bad things are all but certain to happen. And in closing, don't get too comfortable in thinking none of this applies to you. Someone with good intentions is just going mad with the drive to eliminate your job and career next.
