You set out to prove "AI art supporters don't understand art", and yet you leap over some of the basics of artistic workflow and aspirations that I taken for granted as an artist. You pick the lowest hanging fruit to debunk so I should preface that think neither of the "ai supporters" are good examples.
For me appreciating a "randomized" AI piece is like appreciating a sunset or a forest with our own eyes or through a photograph. We do not need to connect with a mind who "made" those. We can appreciate the beauty of a sky that even if it is "random", it derives from certain patterns in nature that our brains find aesthetic. But there is an "art slop" that been around for a long time where most oil painters made at least one landscape rendition based on the same techniques that recapture this beauty, but aren't unique and often a bit bland. Equally I can say that I rather have AI Mononoke on my wall than a Picasso, since to me he just drew ugly faces.
An AI image is similar to the sunset photograph. The "random" generations aren't not just data, they are products that come together from patterns. The aesthetic and patterns are retained in the outcome. And the AI can blend multiple sources in order to make something new that keeps the things that made the original good. You can still feel the expressions of the people who appeared in the original meme photographs that were "Ghiblified" that you call "flat and samey". The AI Mononoke is not a replacement. Without the original by Ghibli the AI version would not exist. The AI version recreate the Ghibli original into an artstyle used by other popular artists. Just like how Scott Campbell did the Disney Princesses. The outcome is a mix of both. Depending on what you want you might prefer the original version, or the blended version, but without the original the remake wouldn't exist.
His own piece, where he make up the original artwork, and gets the AI to enhance it, is an artist who use AI as a graphical tool. Calling that automatically worse just because its AI is like dissing an artist just because they optioned for water color instead of oil paint. He as an artist drives the image in a way that a non-artist struggle with. The difference between AI slop and artistic AI is that an artist tend to know where they want to go and is much more involved into directing or forcing the render, while also being much more perfectionist with the outcome. The result of a good AI artist is that the outcome doesn't look like an AI image and end up way more original than what someone gets from a simple prompt. The artist can even make further enhancements of the AI image itself.
You also have certain AI renditions that are so unique that they end up meme worthy. Such as the viral dancing food. That did not stem from someone just clicking "render". It required a very specific idea, blended with skills on how to drive the AI forth to create the final render and make it look and feel consistent. These AI renditions became good because they are directed by artists. You can even speak more about what went through the mind of the person who created them than your typical Picasso drawing.
