I was in IT back in the late 90's. I played around with a couple of very early AI software (prolog & lisp) for fun. I also remember going to an IBM seminar about the use of robotics in the manufacturing environment. They were waxing eloquent about how this was going to be a boon for IT saying that with all these robots they will need us to repair them. When the Q&A began, I raised my hand and asked, " If a robot can be built to build widgets, let's say, why can't a robot be built to repair robots?" Crickets......
