I think this is key to understand. If the drivers think that car can drive itself, then drivers will be much less carefull than otherwise. So they cannot be judged by the same standards as drivers whose cars don't have such systems. As such I believe McGee should not be considered reclkess in this regard. Also having experienced cars with autonomous stystems, braking acceleration, radar cruise control I myself would be convinced that car will brake by itself in such circumstances like above. Any car, but Teshla aparently. And whereas autonomous driving is harder to achieve, automatic braking has been working reliably for many years now, because it is hardwired and it literally does not care what driver does. When car detects that it is going to impact something it just brakes. Now sure - sometiems it resultsi nfalse positives. I have had this happen many times where I go over the hill, or there is some sort of weird reflection on the road and car beeps or sometimes even start braking. But under no ciscumstances any other car with comparable system woudl have just plowed into those signs and parked cars, it would have at least attemped to brake. 60MPH is not that high of the speed for that road, so any other car most likely would have fully stopped by itself or at very least slowed down to negligible speed before impact, it would have been very minor collision... and I am not even talking most modern systems, I am talking like 2006-2016 technology.
Also Teshla is fundamentally designed that it is imposible to use any of the systems without getting distracted from driving. I kid you not - when I said that to sales rep (that is very hard to navigate the infotainment system without losing focus from driving), that was literally what sales rep said - "don't worry, car drives itself, you jsut need to be inside and monitor it, so you just need to change your mindset, things that would not be okey in normal car are fine in Teshla, it is much safer than any human will ever be, so just let it do it's thing".
