Engagement: The roads in Japan are paved with cement made with coral, which is slick when it rains. A bidirectional 2 lane highway is the size of a normal U.S. one way goat path.
Edit: I lived/drove there for a couple years, and still every time i put my key in the ignition and turned felt like loading the bullet and spinning the cylinder in a Russian roulette game. Most people don't drive or drive a fractional amount of the average American. Everything is so densely packed that most of what you need is walking distance or rail accessible, and 'personal space' is not the bubble we enjoy in the states, which also applies to following distance in vehicles, evidently. There is no 'let me change the radio station or check my phone' on the highway. It's wild, good for Honda, AI like reflexes are basically essential for the truly terrifying high stakes arcade game that is Japanese driving.
