I recently watched a video of someone pretty much crashing out because of how people refuse to practice drawing or doing art. One of the things they said was "[mimicking an AI supporter] 'But what if someone can't draw?' [responding] I don't give a [redacted] There is no such thing as 'I can't draw'. You WON'T draw. You WON'T try. The very concept of trying has never crossed your mind." Although this person's point was aggressively made, and it might have been for comedic purposes, comedy aside, I do see their statement as a valid, well thought out, and over all a very good argument. AI "art" robs users of the experience and practice they could gain by sitting down and spending an hour or two, even five or ten minutes. A person could very well make an image using AI, but what skill does that truly give them artistically? We as human beings have been making all kinds of art since our very existence. They do not learn anything from refusing to try.
It reminded me of a story told by Samdoesarts where someone who was an art teacher told his child he teaches people how to make art, and this child's response was "Did they forget?" or something along those lines. It was a very touching moment to me because we are meant to work with our hands. Drawing, making music, building, sculpting, painting, etc, they stimulate our minds. Making AI images isn't even copying or tracing art to at least develop the skill. (By the way if you copy or trace other artists, make the piece your own and credit the original artist.) Making AI images to me just looks like someone with an insecurity wishing they were someone they are not, but could have been if they would try. It does not provide a person with stimulus nor does it skill.
AI does not understand the value of composition, space, arguably shape and form if we want to argue about how silly the hands often look... Now I cannot really say too much for lighting and colour because I am still learning those things myself, but I noticed in the comments that AI often places a light source maybe in the background, but the lighting will come from a completely different location. I am guilty of this crime too as a beginner digital artist. I am slowly figuring out how light affects a subject. I am mostly a traditional artist, and I do not usually colour in my drawings let alone do crazy lighting, so AI witch hunters, chill. But here is what I can say about it as someone who lacks experience. AI tends to make tons of mistakes that can easily be overlooked by people who are not experienced artists, and AI "artists" don't notice if they do not have the experience to spot these mistakes to attempt to redeem the image. I enjoy line art. Lines to me are top tier satisfaction. So when I see botched AI lines, I am disappointed. I am sure the same goes for lighting for those who pick up on it.
Godspeed for those of who are also learning the concept of lighting and colour. It is very hard.
