One reason is because of how digital media works. Watch tom Scott's "why dark videos are a blocky mess" for more info, but essentially, video compression is biased towards lighter colors. Not skin colors - all colors. I believe the reasoning is people are more likely to film outside in daylight and are more likely to post videos that are brighter. This massively saves on bandwidth, but causes darker bits to be blocky. This means less information for software, like facial recognition software, to work with. There may be intentional or unintentional negative bias towards darker skin tones on top of this, but that's not I'm talking about. Google is trying to mitigate this in android 12 by default, which is nice. Honestly, cameras meant for facial recognition specifically should have the completely flat, pre-LUT look that cinematic cameras have.
