99% that is such a bunch of crap. MIT also said in a study in August that 95% of businesses trying to implement AI haven't seen an ROI yet.
AI augmentation will happen, it won't completely replace a lot of jobs.
Most of this is hype to keep investment high as LLMs plateau.
Business leaders may be convinced that AI can replace their labor force, but it can't, for a bunch of reasons.
A lot of the layoffs are due to other reasons but, rather than admit to a business contraction being the cause, it is sexier to say its because of AI. That narrative sells a lot better to investors.
It is embarrassing that you're amplifying this investor targeted propaganda.
This whole conversation, and the numbers being discussed, is so incredibly ridiculous and unserious, it should be in a tabloid.
If 100 million workers need UBI because of AI, that would be an expense that the tech oligarchs would NEVER agree to, nor be able to afford. 100 million workers at a modest 50k per worker would be $5 trillion per year.
Every US adult receiving $500 per month is an unlivable amount if tens or hundreds of millions are unemployed. We know the owners of capital (the wealthy coporations and oligarchs) will not pay the taxes needed, nor could they even, to actually cover people's incomes.
UBI is just the false promise they will make in exchange for an increasing concentration of corporate power. A CEO of a private company (Anthropic) can say what he wants, but there is no way investors approve of paying the bill for UBI. Most importantly the math will never work. We'd be talking $trillions of dollars per year.
Beyond that, the idea that over 90% of employees will no longer work because AI will do it, is laughable. Assuming we could build good enough robots, we could not produce enough of them due to resource input shortages of litium and other precious metals and minerals. We will not be able to provide the materials and electricity, etc. for tens of millions and hundreds of millions of robots.
Then, there are the code deprecations, and the need to train new models and perform upgrades, or provide continuous learning without catastrophic forgetting, etc.
That professor is drinking too much of his own coolaid. 99% in 5 years? One has to be fully entrapped in groupthink echo chambers to utter such nonsense.
The level of hyperbole and nonsense around these issues is tragically comical.
