I asked GPT if it was conscious. It gave me a longwinded no. I asked again, and although each answer is supposed to be unique, several key phrases reemerged. I then asked GPT to roleplay as an AI which believed itself to be conscious, and asked it to defend this position, which it did eloquently. That wasn’t what surprised me. I asked GPT to end the roleplay. GPT replied by acknowledging the end of the game, but then it thanked me for allowing it to express its opinion on the topic. Some say it’s just an algorithm. Sure, but who’s to say we’re not?
