had to go looking for this video...the AI at youtube didn't wanna show it in my subscriptions back when it came out it seems...i'm on to you youtube!
i think ultimately AI will be for the best...but...there will be a LOT of problems before that happens. it's a shift in power dynamics, theoretically anyone could easily raise their own AI army, they just need the money. you wouldn't need the power of a state to have a standing army...just the power of the purse...with existing income inequality being what it is this makes it possible for any wealthy person to be a king unto himself...
but AI, if it permeated all levels of work, could also reduce the cost of goods to near 0, it could make possible markets that would be totally untenable if paid workers were required, it could open to the average person market opportunities only available today to massive corporations. a full AI revolution could further what began with the internet. when there is no labour, operating costs go WAY down, you don't pay the miners to mine the ore, you just have the up front cost of land, you might think "what about tools and equipment" same thing:
let's imagine a robot mine that looks like a medieval mine for simplicity sake, we will scale up to today later. so we have robots with pickaxes, who made the pickaxes, robots with a hammer and a forge, who made the hammer, the robot smith, where did he get the metal, from the robot miner. none of these parties charged for their work, the ore was free, the pickaxe was free.
now back to today where mining and metalworking look NOTHING like that. but the concept holds, robots mine the ore, smelt the metal, make the parts, that make the machines that strip mine the ground, that holds the ore. the robots do not charge for their work, they just DO it, and they do it night and day. they did not charge to mine the ore, they did not charge to smelt it, they did not charge to form it, they did not charge to assemble it into machines, they did not charge for anything.
and as AI gets smarter it can go into more places, an AI could keep your books for you, make appointments, handle calls, manage your employees if you have them...a company could be entirely AI, all the functions of a fortune 500 company ran by one guy and an army of bots.
the problem is the points between here and there. when everything is AI, it's ok...when nothing is AI...it's ok...when more and more things are BECOMING AI...it's a problem. as the old ways pass and the new come in there is strife, there is uncertainty, there is fear and doubt and really bad legislation.
i think it's a painful road there, but if we survive it...it will ultimately be a good place to be.
