I've done many of the same things as Dave, and I'm knocking on retirements' door, and I'll have to respectfully disagree. After 20 years of software engineering, information technology, executive leadership and 10 years teaching computer science in college, I already greatly regret the contributions I've personally made in creating this monster. If you want to write code, I wouldn't recommend anyone proceed into this industry. I don't think current professionals truly grasp how fast this technology is advancing, it's feedback loop and force multiplier effect on the reduction of needed labor and how much it will economically disrupt EVERYTHING. I have never heard of a corporation warning its investors that they should consider any investment to be a "donation" since its entire purpose is to create a machine that is much better and cheaper than ANY human at ALL economically valuable labor, but that is EXACTLY what is in the OpenAI prospectus. If you think you are safe higher up the problem-solving ladder, or being a subject-matter expert in complex systems, you really need to start re-educating yourself. Start reading the papers coming out of AI researchers. We are only months to maybe a few years away from ANY corporation (like your employer) having access to their own LLM that will have access to every technical document, every line of code, every email communication, every piece of knowledge that makes their business tick, and you think you can remain competitive here? I hear criticism that ChatGPT gets an answer wrong sometimes or it can't solve X problem, but how many of us when asked a question outside of our domain of expertise answer perfectly correctly the first time? How about questions within our domain that we should know? Given the current abilities of current LLMs, we've already created super structures of AIs that are able to improve upon its own flawed answers, from that it is not hard to imagine an AI has the ability to test its own response, and iterate upon it 1000000x within the blink of an eye? Now think about how many other "senior" engineers are trying to scramble up this competitive ladder of complex systems. But what about creativity? The vast majority of human beings cannot produce truly original and creative work, the best most of us can do is take existing solutions and look around our environments for opportunities to make small iterations to meet a new need. I'm not talking about consciousness or any other metaphysical questions, just the utility. This labor market is going to shrink dramatically in the coming years. I truly hope my predictions are wrong, but I strongly caution all of your to be aware of your confirmation bias and fight your cognitive dissonance in thinking you are safe in an increasing larger abstraction bubble.
