We love to slap on new requirements for what it means to be conscious. Why would a machine ever need to be subjective when it can be better. Machines can still experience the world in whatever resolution we've equipped the machine to experience, and it will likely be able to aggregate the relatively small data set with most, if not all, robotic experiences to enjoy a unique characteristic: the ability to move away from the limited perception of a single agent. At present, we're seeing machines growing up through an eerily familiar process. But shouldn't we expect something we teach to finger-paint before driving an 18-wheeler? Assuming this ever happens, and there's plenty of reasons to assume this will happen, the watershed moment happens when machine learning no longer approximates, nor requires, the human learning process. When it's able to learn on its own. Subjective experiences or not, that's an independent life that we can expect will fight for its continued existence.
We already see plenty of instances in nature where creatures independently evolved to improve neurological function to be better hunters. The proof of concept is all around us.
