We definitely don't just teach SW tools in the degree course I teach on in Ireland. That would be an offensive waste of what's typically a fifth of the life span of our typical age cohort. But our course title still includes the Graphic Design phrase in the title. Design & Optics is the phrase I'm playing with as we enter our programme redesign this year. We focus on process, problem, thinking, audience, and modelling student experience on real world challenges tackled over a longer time period than real world, fully expressed in a process book that functions like a super slow-mo memory in the student of creative process in multiple domains. This provides them with detailed first hand experiential internal memory of the 'how' of process that helps them integrate that 'how' with the 'why' element of the future challenges they'll need to sink their teeth into. To be fair, in this era, ubiquitous AI doesn't simplify corporate or attentional competition. Differentiation still matters. Convenient shortcuts in design deployment usually get swept aside by the pressures of higher quality competion. This isn't a new phenomenon.
