I'm a huge advocate on learning how to read and write code as the media and ceos like to hype things that's far from realty. in fact its an essential foundational skill set required esp when dealing with generated code. Without a programming background or a solid understanding on design patterns, data structures and algorithms, you wouldn't get very far and things can turn catastrophic if you don't understand what the hell you are doing. Programming is part of solving problems. Understanding the code output with human oversite, modification, creativity, checking for bugs and security vulnerabilities is where having a programming background shines. Machine learning models are far from creating complex software esp an operating system, nor they understand business requirements and complex system architecture design and distributed systems.
