Much of the debate about AI overlooks the reality of ecological limits. As the climate and biodiversity crises intensify, societies will have to consume less. That makes the idea of rapidly building fleets of robots or self-driving cars unrealistic and paradoxically, human labour could become more valuable as material throughput declines. AI itself requires vast amounts of energy, and unless breakthroughs like practical nuclear fusion emerge, it will be bound by the same limits. Even if automation displaced most traditional jobs, there would still be enormous work to do in areas currently undervalued by markets such as cleaning up plastic, removing invasive species and restoring degraded ecosystems. Embracing this kind of regenerative work could reframe employment, meet real needs, provide an opportunity for collaboration with AI... and in doing so it might even persuade our creations that humanity is worth preserving.
