You can't really accuse ChatGPT of trying to cover up its own failings. Every individual conversation you have with ChatGPT basically creates your own chatbot, and so it has no access to anything it may or may not have said to someone else. So if you ask it if it tried to poison another user, it (the bot you're using) won't have any record of that. It's response probably became "confusing" because when pressed, it began mixing its own recollection (the conversations it had with you) and what it found online, which it (rightfully) didn't recognize as a story about itself. Hence the difference between "I" and "ChatGPT". ChatGPT sometimes can't even access other conversations of your own, especially if they were generated by older versions, so everything is very, VERY segmented.
