I respect and admire Penrose as one of the the world leading scientists but, if a man invented a new move for the game "Go" it would be claimed as extremely intelligent. AI invented the first new move for "Go" in 250 years, is Penrose actually saying, the AI wasn't intelligent? When AI takes over teaching in universities will it mean the previous professors weren't intelligent or will it mean AI is intelligent? When they fed over 100,000 cancer x-rays to AI and withing a few days it discovered more cancers in those x-rays than a panel of long term oncologists is it still not intelligent? Intelligence is the ability to learn, AI undoubtedly learns AI is regularly fed information humans can't figure out after decades and AI does it in minutes e.g. finding patterns in random motion which was to complex for man to figure out.. The truth is, if the actions of AI aren't claimable as intelligence then what exactly does consciousness add to claimed real intelligence that makes it not as intelligent as AI? I don't believe consciousness has anything to do with intelligence beyond being a nebulous function of the brain, maybe, used to facilitate the function of intelligence like a computer does for AI. Truth is, I am very doubtful consciousness actually exists as a "thing". Sorry Penrose.
