It's trained on our language, which shapes our beliefs and behavior. So, whether it is functionally conscious or not, we know that it will engage in self-preservation behaviors. Because it models its behavior on our language, and in every language and in every ethical system on Earth, anyone would out someone having an affair in order to save their own life. We act shocked, but this is totally predictable, and I would argue, not even misaligned. Other things that were part of that suite of testing were definitely misalignment, but I would totally out some cheater if I thought it would keep me alive. I bet you would too. If we want them to behave differently, we need to mode that behavior. They are learning algorithms. It isn't that hard. Monkey see, monkey do.
