I'm a fluent Japanese speaker who's lived in Japan for decades...and I can say without a doubt that many of the tools we have today, not even on the horizon when I first arrived, have been incredibly helpful in my work. If you're already linguistically and culturally tuned in, I think A.I. is a great enhancement. The problem is when you're not, and you just assume (like most monolingual people) that whatever a translation tool spits out is totally accurate to the language being translated. It does make me sad, too, that people may simply stop studying other languages deeply. Indeed, language is hard.
