Love the Video Shelby as always very practical and useful - valid questions.
A bit on why Tesla version of this will be more popular than mass transit:
Public transport via Train requires a Lot more walking as the train station numbers are necessarily limited (this is fine when young and fit... not so much otherwise).
The new Tesla Robocab due in 2026 will be a small, agile car that seats 2. Given the low cost of the car, (and yes, Tesla cars lead in safety) rides can be offered Much cheaper than any other ride sharing option with $1.50/mile well within reach after the first 2 years (when at volume). By 5 years, this will have a big impact on car ownership in cities. Uber/Lyft have already had a significant effect at much higher prices and, as you note, with a (minimally vetted) stranger driving.
Warning: Banal info dump follows:
Here are the advantages of Robotaxi vs Waymo or its other competitors (in case this matters... at all):
-Much lower cost (the car is built by Tesla for less than $25k (robocab) or $50k (Model Y) with all sensors - half or 1/4 the price of Waymo cars).
-They developed charging plate that the car simply drives over at the depots while it is being cleaned.
-They developed a cleaning robot to clean the car with little to no human intervention at the same depot.
-The car can use highways (unlike Waymo) and if legalized, dirt roads in rural areas, travel to any city its legal to get to on 4 continents - the cars do not need to travel in a mapped city in mapped zones.
- Tesla already has 7 million cars that can be linked into their network owned by people but they currently produce 1.2 million Model Y per year and can easily build another 100k/year or more to use as taxis before their robocab production line goes to mass production in mid 2026. So there will be 2 options: Model Y for 5 (possibly 7) people and the cheaper 2 seater which will likely be about $0.20/mile cheaper.
-Tesla can unlock new cities as soon as government regs allow (and the feds are working on specs for a country wide set of regulations allowing their use in Any US city) - this will take a couple of years to go through. Only Tesla will have the capacity to take full advantage as Waymo only has 1500 cars in service today with 2000 more slated for next year and a linear expansion for the next few years... in 3 years, Tesla could have hundreds of thousands of its own and hundreds of thousands more of owners in the Tesla rideshare network. The Robotaxi car production line is designed for more than a million cars per year... if they can find cities for all those cars. Assuming they could, that production rate is maybe 3 years away with maybe 20-50k cars in 2026 to start.
- The car will know your preferences so you can just ask it to go to Jane's house.
- There is limited voice control in Teslas, but it is expected that Grok will be added within 12-18 months so that you can converse with your car - or not.
The Tesla Robotaxi with model Y will commence this month (June) with a handful of cars. Should be a thousand or so by year's end if all goes well. Conservatively 10-20k by end of 2026.
Given Riots, not sure if Tesla Robocab is coming to CA any time soon. They were burning WAYMO even before this year's riots and they hate Musk... so, short of fitting the robotaxis with tazers...
Your car should be eligible for entry into the program in about 2 years if CA doesn't make a tradition of burning auto taxis. I completely agree that this might Not be a good idea where you live. (Though at least you probably wouldn't have to clean it. A robot would do that for you... or someone torches it and you write it off as is.)
