That's such a huge problem. They don't see art as actual work and skill. They don't see the years of dedication and hard work we've put in. They don't see us reading books and taking notes and drilling a skill until our hand does it automatically. They don't see us studying master works and breaking down techniques to pull elements of it into their work. They don't see all the bad drawings and paintings and pieces that came before. They see the finished project and the rest may as well be magic. Like with writing, they don't see the notebooks filled with odeas and fragments. They don't see the endless research, or just how rough the first draft was. They see the finished product and understand how to type words and don't see the work and rewrites and technique and study that goes in. They just see the finished book and assume that talent is the gap between their ability to write a book and the author's ability to write a good book.
Talent only gets you so far. Talent is passive. And high quality art isn't passive. It's a set of skills, similar to cooking. No one walks in the kitchen the first day, turns on the oven or stove for the first time and knows exactly how to cook a several course meal. That's an ability that comes with lots of familiarity with the tools and which techniques work well for what tasks, as well as knowledge of hazards and how to prevent them. Art is the same.
It's a matter of what tickles your brain just right that becomes talent. It makes you want to do this work. It makes this work not feel as much like work as other work. That's all. Some people have it for math, or facts about dinosaurs, or whatever else they're drawn to. To me, math is about as close as you can get to torture without someone calling the police. I have never had a fun experience with math. It's the worst and I don't want to do it. But there are others out there who see it as a thing of beauty and are drawn to it like months to flame. I was still able to get through Calculus without enjoying math. Hated every last pencil stroke, but I did it. If you want to make images and animate and all that, watch some tutorials, read an art fundamentals book that starts you from scratch and shows you the basics that talent helps you observe organically to some degree, and acquire the building blocks. You're now on equal footing with someone with talent and you can go collect the skills you need to go further. There are tons of artists who share their book lists. Study and practice. One day it will be like walking and running or riding a bike, or eating with a fork or chopsticks. Difficult at first, but it's something you can do now as if it were built in once you've learned it. You probably don't even remember learning, but there was a day when you couldn't do it, and a time when it was a struggle, and at some point it's not even conscious, it's a building base for other skills.
