As an artist myself, personally, I am not that worried about AI. Many may not be aware, but the law doesn't recognize copyright for art that is not produced by humans. So AI art has zero commercial value because no one can own it. Is public domain by default. I mean sure, it can do damage... I mean, you can still sell T-shirts with the art for example, which will oversaturate even more an already oversaturated market. But other than that, it won't do much. I tested AI and personally I am not impressed. Obviously, those who are hyped about AI are the tech geeks and those entitled brats on Reddit, who wished they could draw but are too lazy to put in the years of work we put in and now feel great about themselves while generating pro-level art. But as an artist, I tried to find the actual utility of AI, or create something I wanted to create, and honestly, it wasn't much there. I think AI could help, artists who can visualize an image in their head, to create mock-ups of art, which they could use as inspiration. In a similar fashion, it could be used for training, and inspiration by others. But to generate art with actual use is pretty much impossible. I tested AI to see if it could be used to generate backgrounds for Webcomics and manga, and while it did, they were never close to what I had in mind. And in all the time I wasted I could have actually drawn myself a bunch of it. Is pointless to generate an image of a room, if it can't generate different angles of the room and the room from all sides for example. And I think that many artists are just too scared to think logically about all this. Just think how much work and planning goes in doing a commission for a client. Let's say we do a landscape (AI 'artists love to do those). How many sketches do we do before even starting? How many revisions are done while working on it, and even before is finished, until the client gets what it wants? There is a lot of communication involved in commercial art. AI art is basically like a loot box for drawings. You put in some inputs but don't know what exactly you get before getting it. That's not going to work with clients. Is just more practical to use humans. Personally, I think AI at the moment is a fad. A lot of kids who can't draw but wish they could are hyped about it. But give them some time, and most will grow bored of it, and move to the next thing. And then, AI 'art' will develop its own niche, and stay there. Ironically, I think that we artists may end up making use of AI in one way or another as a tool, instead of the Reddit kids. Just like we use brushes, photo editing, and 3D in our art, we may find a use for AI too. I think a great comparison of AI, is 3D auto-generated environments in video games. They are a thing, but they didn't leave 3D artists without a job, did they?
