as a software engineer, the value is not in "getting AI to generate code". The AI-driven value is when a senior engineer:
- Utilizes AI to generate a detailed plan and implement small chunks of code that can be reviewed manually. It is way faster for a senior engineer to review code than write it themself.
- Every single line of AI-generated code should be reviewed manually. When this doesn't happen, AI may delete databases or have "slop" sneak through in production.
The reason why the SWE market is slowing down is not because "ai is writing code that an engineer used to write". It's because senior engineers who know how to leverage AI tools are now working at 1.5-2x speed as before. Because of this, an engineering team of 10 can be replaced b a team of 5-6 now, which is where the result comes in, that "AI took 4 SWE jobs".
also, a lot of the points mentioned in the video are obsolete after Claude's opus 4.5/4.6 models. The new opus 4.6 high is smarter than most engineers when it comes to coding.
