When someone says “but artists steal when they reference” I always think about how one of my OC’s was inspired originally by Homestuck and pictures of sunsets, but I didn’t realize until a few weeks ago that his face shape is just my husband’s face. The dips in the cheeks when he opens his mouth, the jaw line, and the eye shape. I wanted to redesign this old OC that I had made based on Homestuck characters into being an incredibly attractive man, and my braid subconsciously decided there was no one more attractive than the person I’m married too. But an AI cannot do that. And AI cannot use its own experiences in art. It can only recreate what is already there. Also, I’m a disabled artists. I have arthritis and I have to take a break every 10 minutes (if I’m lucky, sometimes I only get 5) or my hand will start to go numb, be excruciatingly painful, and I won’t be able to hold the stylus. There have been days at a time where I cannot draw at all. I have a friend with arthritis too who has had to have many surgeries and has to take breaks that last for weeks sometimes. Neither of us use AI. Because art is about the CREATION of it. We love to MAKE the art, not just look at the finished product. Our OCs are our babies.
