I agree with the broad concerns but not the proposed solutions. Many of them could easily backfire or end up working very differently in practice.
For example, shortening the work week sounds great, but unless it’s structured very carefully, some people would just volunteer for longer hours to get ahead, and we’d drift back to the same problem. If the goal is healthier work-life balance, then you need a system that both limits hours and ensures workers are compensated fairly. Today people often work more than ever but don’t see matching rewards, so something has to change there.
I also think employees should have more influence within a company. Decisions that directly affect day-to-day work should involve the people doing it. But long-term strategy and financial decisions still require people with the right background. I don’t think electing leadership purely by popularity makes sense, but I do think companies should require leaders to have real experience in the field. A lot of problems come from executives making choices without understanding the product or community they’re serving—something you see in creative industries like gaming.
I disagree with the idea that all companies should be pushed into the same ownership structure. Some businesses work best when privately run, especially when the founder has a strong vision. Forcing those companies into a model where leadership can be replaced by a vote could create instability. Workers who want a say can still buy shares if they choose, and outside investors shouldn’t automatically be shut out. And giving workers total control over leadership could create its own type of imbalance. Unions and corporate boards both have strengths and weaknesses, so a shared decision-making model based on the type of issue makes more sense. For example, matters related to working conditions should involve employees, while broader direction should involve people who handle the long-term planning. The government could at least require scheduled discussions so both sides stay connected.
As for the proposed tax on automation, I think it would have the opposite effect. When similar policies were tried decades ago, businesses simply shifted their operations elsewhere, taking jobs with them. A new version of that policy could just push investment away again, only this time with automated systems instead of people. Incentives work better than penalties.
Overall, I don’t think these solutions address the core issues.
My own thoughts:
A baseline income could help people meet essential needs—housing, food, and stability—especially if the housing market is better regulated to prevent extreme prices.
Funding such a system would require reorganizing how public finances work. Right now the structure involves having money loaned to us, which we must pay back with interest, there's no way to do that under UBI, because our source of money would be the government itself, and their sources of money would be quite limited, say to tariffs, bonds, or diplomatic deals, thus major changes will be needed to make a national income program viable and sustainable...(this bit I edited myself, my original comment got deleted by YT, I think you know what, and SPECIFIC words and names I used for this part, I parsed it through GPT to rewrite my whole comment, but I just had to be a bit more specific for this second idea...I think you understand what I mean by MAJOR change and who I'm talking about as to where "our" money comes from, but if for some reason you don't think about how our system works right now, and how UBI would be impossible with that current system, where would the money come from, how would you pay back interest).
Work should become more about passion and contribution than obligation. Many people would still choose to work, but it shouldn’t be tied to basic survival anymore. People could decide how much time they want to invest in their interests or careers.
