Why do the conspiracy weirdos seem to lose their skepticism when it comes to certain subjects like this? "All the top AI people say this is a huge risk and are doing it anyway." Because they know there is no risk. But saying there is one is EXCELLENT exposure, because it gets tons of media attention and clicks. It's PR. The one time you really are being played by people in power for monetary gain and you take the story at face value, purely because it's the scarier option. Hilarious if it wasn't so pathetic.
