It seems to me that Captain Kirk would not know the gross national project of Rigel 7 if his more intelligent than himself A.I. did not provide him with the data he needs.

Now given all their intelligence, they still did not make backups of Spock when they sent him through the transporter. So he died. Even while the captain pleaded "Don't die Spock!" Wrath of Kahn
So you see something that a short number of years later we can look at all that and say moron, do your backups, was not part of our psyche back then.
Yet in many ways our technology has been driven by concepts that were in that show. Like communicators.
As far as A.I. goes, it does not matter, who turns you into a battery.
So really it is always humans or aliens I suppose who are making the A.I. and governing their behaviors.
