Ai will eventually kill itself. People use ai (to include corporations) but it's counterproductive. Ai replaces jobs (whether it's art, or customer service or WHATEVER else). Corporations enjoy ai because they don't have to pay it a salary--which means more profit for less. And before people say that's greedy--the average person is equally as greedy. They'll buy products they know are made with slave labor overseas, saying they don't agree with forced labor and think it's "sad," but they still want those cheap products more than they want to care about how ethical slave labor is. Slavery is "bad," but OH! Look how cute this shirt is from Shein! And so cheap! They buy it anyway and just don't want you to mention how ethical it is. And it's not just clothes. They want an A+ grade in school, but they don't want to pay the cost of it (the study and work) and rather have ai do it for them. They want the credit for "writing" a book, but again don't want to do it, etc. The average person is just as greedy and ambitious as the average corporate CEO and is more often than not willing to take the easy and cheaper way out for self profit, just like corporations.
The problem, apart from people being dumber (imagine in a few years, you'll likely have doctors who used ai to cheat their way through medical school operating on you... That's comforting), they're also creating the environment that will steal their own jobs. As you said, when the corporations start laying people off, people won't have money to spend. When people don't have money to spend, they'll stop BUYING. When they stop buying all that extra stuff, the economy will begin to suffer (because healthy financial circulation requires making sure your middle class is large and healthy so that they feel more free to spend money while still feeling motivated to contribute to society by working and filling a role in the community to earn it. It's like blood flow helping the body live. Work hard, play hard = healthy economy). But when the middle class is shrinking or gone, when the desire to "work hard" is broken and replaced with a desire for "quick, easy, and cheap," corporations will begin to suffer and dissolve VERY rapidly. (We especially saw this during Covid. Very successful companies disappeared almost overnight when people were forced to stay at home and couldn't go out shopping, and economies world-wide were on the verge of collapsing in less than 2 years). And, unfortunately, with the middle class gone, and big corporations destroyed, and the economy will be destroyed, and there will be a Great Depression all over again.
And only THEN will the politicians likely begin to outlaw and heavily manage ai's use (unless we have some wise politicians in BOTH liberal and conservative parties who work preemptively TOGETHER at the first signs of economic distress. Those first signs would be right about now). Ultimately, you'll have 2 outcomes: #1 politicians ban or limit ai's permissive use and earnestly work to try and rebuilt capital by building up the middle class (as the very definition of "capitalism" means the average people control the money flow--or "capital"--in a nation instead of the government) and the nation revives. (Note, this may take a couple years or so, depending on how bad they let it get before making regulations). OR #2, (and this has been very common in history)--the politicians take advantage (if not helped cause) the economic crash so they can absorb the money (or "capital") of the nation into the government for themselves--meaning the government controls all the money and industry in a nation (this type of economy is called "socialism") and dictate who gets what and how much on the whim of whoever is in office. If the people control the money, the people have a voice in government. If the government controls the money, only the government's voice matters and the people fall in line with whatever the current group of politicians tell them. This is why many socialisms end up becoming a 2-class system consisting of the average citizen living in poverty or rich politicians and their circle of people.
And, unfortunately, that may not have been the reason for CREATING ai (with the creator of ai actually grieved with how things have been going and wondering if it should have ever been made), but that's the reality of how ai is being UTILIZED.
But, just like with everything else, though ai is a new tool in the game, this exact same struggle has been going on for 1000s of years. (Just ask the ancient Romans).
