It only proves one more time, that although Lovecraft may not have been the best writer of all time in technical terms by todays (questionable) standards - he was notoriously verbose, bad at dialogue and could't pull off good action scenes, except in 'Shadow over Innsmouth' - he certainly was on another level regarding his concepts and ideas, which were far, far ahead of his time and immediately catapult him to one in a million millions genius level. It was also not humans who created the shoggoths, it was an ancient alien civilization, which he calls 'the elder things', and which was eventually destroyed by the artificial intelligence, the protoplasmic shoggoths, that they created to do the menial tasks fort them. He was the first writer in human history to ever flesh out this concept, one of many, many things that he did first and in which he has proven to be almost a prophet.
