I see this AI consciousness debate similarly to trans debate, strangely enough. I know it sounds weird but let me cook. Let's say we have a trans woman that went through all the operations, looks, sounds and acts like a woman. Well, she's a woman to me (I'm not saying that I would see her only as a woman with all those requirements met, I'm trying to keep it simple). Some people would say that's she's not because she wasn't born that way and her DNA is male or whatever. I understand this perspective but I don't care. Interacting with her I'm not interacting with her DNA, I can only experience the outside and the consciousness to some extent. DNA is irrelevant here. I see a woman, this person tells me she's a woman, she's a woman. Simple as that. Now going back to AI. It's not exactly the same but it's the same principle. If AI talks like a person, emulates feeling like a person, and appears to be thinking like a person, I'm going treat them as a person. I'm not seeing the code that makes it all happen so my experience is unchanged. BUT, this time it's a little bit different to trans analogy. If it would be confirmed beyond reasonable doubt that it's only emulation, then yeah, I would approach AI a bit differently but not by a lot. I already try to be polite while talking with language models. The reason it's different being: it's as if someone would told me that my friend has been faking empathy towards me because he's a psychopath. I would start treating him differently because his feelings and thoughts can have a tangible effect on my life, as opposed to DNA of someone (unless we have babies but that's too far off topic). But if it couldn't be confirmed or denied for sure if AI has consciousness then yeah, they are a person to me.
