It's a great idea, but it relies very heavily on the intrinsic motivation and task initiation skills of the students. If all the kids are students who are highly motivated to succeed, who actively want to be at school and doing all of these fun projects, I think that it has the potential to be very successful. However, given my own experience with students, a large percentage of them lack that intrinsic motivation and would not do well in a school that doesn't kind of force them along. You can make the argument that they will rise to the occasion when given the opportunity and responsibility, and you may be right, but there is also very good chance that they will not. Think about COVID and virtual school. Kids were given unprecedented freedom over their education and had all these new resources available to them, and now a few years later we have plummeting literacy rates and a general consensus that these kids lack age appropriate academic and social skills.
This is going to sound really mean and abrasive, but someone made a comment about how schools were designed to create worker bees and not freethinkers, and they're absolutely right, but I don't think that's as bad of a thing as they're making it out to be. Sure, everyone wants to be the leader, the important person, the creative person who isn't held back by anyone else, but society can't function if all we have are thinkers without doers. New ideas only work when they are able to be applied, and they are only able to be applied on a large scale when you have people who are willing and able to follow instructions. Like it or not, the majority of adults now are people who follow instructions. The majority of current students are also going to be people who follow the instructions of others, and that's not an inherently bad thing. Sure, promote creativity and self-reliance and free thought, but it is also important that we teach our kids how to follow instructions, how to work as a team, how to do things that they don't necessarily want to do. If we try to raise all our children as leaders and innovators and entrepreneurs, society will collapse, because leaders only work when they have people to lead. The phrase "too many cooks in the kitchen" comes to mind.
