Virtualization such as VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, Docker, LXC, as it matured, reduced operational support staff by 90% in datacenters, it reduced hardware purchases by as much as 60% to 80% for some organizations, it reduced the growth of datacenters, it increased for a short term the number of engineers, software designers, etc., that help spin up these new style datacenter landscapes. It increased sales for networking and storage vendors. But as the virtualization technology adoption increased, the human impact became very clear and real, impacting lives. There is even today, about 20 odd years since the early days of VMware and close after Hyper-V, that are still impacting the IT job market, of course now over shadowed by A.I. But if you look closely at the trending you can see how in hindsight virtualization adoption was very disruptive to the IT job market. When you cut in half all the hardware you purchase because you better utilize what you already have... when you can have global operational teams that are 10% the size of the regional and local support teams.... it is a major significant impact. And that was implemented and for the most part only IT impacting its self, so to speak. Now, A.I. will impact many different aspects of society. Just think how significant and disruptive A.I. will be, looking at how virtualization as an example was a limited scope disruption? Unions will be forced to push back, as 100,000s if not millions of people cannot find work, because of the ripple effect. As with the Model-T car, it put no only many blacksmiths out of work, but stable boys, carpenters, leather workers, taming firms, farmers, horse ranchers... you don't need things to support horses when you use cars. Yes cars created some new opportunities but the technology reduced the scope of opportunities... just like virtualization did in IT. So will A.i. only to a much greater extent than anything before in human history. Riots, civil unrest, conflicts? Are these possible? Yes, when people cannot feed themselves, cannot protect themselves, etc. All because technology always reduced need for labor, an every consistent reduction of need of labor capacity. That is the going to be the legacy of A.I. even if A.I. does not try to kill us.
